Comments: Fantastic special effects for its time, however, it had trouble living up to the all great images conjured up by the 1938 radio broadcast with which I was more familiar (probably not a very fair comparison).
You are setting a pretty high bar if you are putting your imagination up against movie images from 1953. Have you seen The Day the Earth Stood Still - the original from 1951? The effects are ok, but the movie itself stands the test of time, I think. Not sure the same can be said for the 2008 remake, but then I've only caught a few minutes of that one on TV.
Ah yes. The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) was excellent and part of the measuring stick I used when rating this film. It seems to have stood the test of time quite well. Oddly enough, I thought 2008 remake was pretty decent, especially the first half.
